Today we participated in a school liturgy in honour of Blessed Mary MacKillop, as we celebrate her feast day. Mary MacKillop had a great influence on the Catholic Church with more women having a leadership role within the church. Mary's life has had a profound effect on society as some people pray to her for miracles in times of need.
We also held our Yr 4-6 assembly today, where the students showcased some of their learnings so far this term. We were shown snippets from their Science lessons involving the sun and its importance to Earth, to very 'catchy' phrases from creative writing. It is wonderful to see the students so enthusiastic about their work.
Trinity Open Week Tours: Next week we will be conducting tours before and after school for families who are considering sending their child to Trinity in 2021. If you would like to book a tour or know of someone who would, please contact the helpful staff at the front office.
Update for Families on COVID-19
Trinity Primary School and Catholic Education continue to take advice from health authorities in relation to COVID-19. The Catholic Education Office has a team that is actively monitoring the COVID-19 situation as it develops, paying particular attention to local hotspots and organising support for schools where required. Trinity Primary School is practicing all safe hygiene practices in line with government advice. We understand that the situation is fairly fluid and we will communicate directly with you should there be any important changes in relation to our school operations in the coming weeks. We remind all families:
- If your child is unwell, they should not attend school.
- Please ensure that anyone who presents with COVID-19 symptoms in your family is tested.
- Parents should avoid routinely entering the school where possible but can attend scheduled school events and meetings with teachers where required (physical distancing and hygiene measures still apply). Should you have any questions in relation to our school and COVID-19, please feel free to contact our office.
When to Stay Home from School
Please keep your child at home if they are showing any symptoms of sickness. Once your child is well again, they can return to school. If your child develops any symptoms such as a fever, cough, sore throat or shortness of breath:
- Call your GP in the first instance. By calling your GP before arriving they can take appropriate infection control measures.
- Call your school to let them know.
- In the event of an emergency please dial 000.
School Fundraising: This year fundraising has been particularly challenging with parameters around COVID19 and social distancing. The Community Council met last night and fundraising was discussed at length. We are extremely grateful to the Council, who have always done an amazing job to support our school to ensure the school is well resourced and maintained. Our next fundraiser will be a recipe book. This is a great way for all members of the family to get involved and everyone always loves a great country recipe book. So, we’d like you to get behind this worthwhile cause and start searching for your tried and true family favourite recipes. Slow cooker recipes, mains, desserts, cakes, slices, salads etc. Please email them in a word document to fiona.bassingthwaigh@cg.catholic.edu.au. Every recipe that comes to school will have the senders name in the book and will earn 10 house points. More information will be sent home in the coming weeks regarding sponsorship of pages, but it is envisaged that the cookbook will be ready before the end of the year just in time for Christmas. We’d love to get parents involved to set up a sub-committee to coordinate and organise the cookbook. Fiona Bassingthwaighte is happy to head this committee. This is a job that can be done remotely. Please contact Fiona if you think this is a job for you!
First Eucharist: Please keep our Year 4 students in your prayers. They have been busy preparing for the Sacrament of First Reconciliation which they made on Wednesday and First Eucharist which will be held at a special Mass this Sunday at 10:30am at St Anthony’s, for the candidates and their families. Due to restrictions with COVID19 we must keep to only 100 people in the church at one time. We thank Ms Wade, Mr Niddrie and Mrs Doolan for their assistance to prepare the children.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
God Bless and keep well,
Marylou Gorham
National Principals Day
Today is National Principal's Day, where we recognise the leadership, contribution, strength and support Mrs Gorham brings every day to Trinity students, staff members, families and the wider community. We'd like to thank Mrs Gorham for the incredible and valuable work she does year-round.
Leadership Presentation
At our assembly this morning, the school presented Amelia Loydell with her leadership badges. Amelia will be an ICT Minister and a Murray House Captain. The Year 6 Ministers are excited to have Amelia part of the Leadership team. Congratulations Amelia!
Annual Satisfaction Surveys
The annual satisfaction survey of parents, students and staff will be conducted on behalf of all Catholic schools in the Diocese this term. The surveys are designed to gather feedback from parents, staff and students about our school and will be used to inform school improvement. Responses are confidential and individuals can not be identified. The surveys will be launched via email on Friday 7 August 2020 using the email addresses supplied to the school. If you do not receive an email with a link to the survey, you can access and complete the survey at the following link: https://www.research.net/r/trinitycatholicprimaryparent2020
Chocolate Fundraiser
The Cadbury fundraising drive is now finished. Please return all money raised and any unsold chocolates to the front office by next Wednesday, August 12. Thank you to all our families for the enthusiastic way that you supported this great initiative.
Pick up & Drop off
The pick-up and drop off arrangements which were put in place last term, still continue. Please park your car in front of the presbytery so the children can exit and walk to the gate. A teacher will be on duty at the front gate from 8:45 to 9:10 am as well as after school. We request that parents maintain social distancing practices at all times when coming to and from school. If in the event your child/children are late to school or being picked up early, you are still required to sign them in and out with social distancing practices in place at the front office.
Communication
Communication to our parents and carers is always a priority. Please check our Schoolzine App for newsletters, upcoming events and announcements. Notes are always sent home for key events but don’t forget to check FaceBook for notifications or the newsletter which is emailed out to each family every Friday and can also be viewed on our website. The newsletter is also available via hard copy from the front office on request. Please ensure you make it a priority to read our amazing newsletter as it is informative and will help keep you updated with what is happening in the school and community.

The First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion Candidates are: Bella Betts, Billy Corkhill, Thomas Edwards, Charlie Jackson, Zoe Lenehan, Beatrice Lucas, Emerson Mann-Rea, Tomas Mariani, Grace Metcalfe, Michael Oakley, Tommie Parker, Skye Peterson, Imogen Smith and Ryan Sumich.
First Eucharist Sunday

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, this special mass is extended to the students and families receiving the Sacrament only. We apologise for any inconvenience this poses to friends and parishioners, but we know you are all keeping our young candidates in your thoughts and prayers.
The Feast of Saint Mary MacKillop - Feast Day – 8 August
This week we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Saint Mary of the Cross (MacKillop). Mary MacKillop was born in 1842 in Fitzroy, Melbourne. Inspired by a meeting with Fr. Julian Tenison-Woods, Mary MacKillop took her vows at the age of twenty-five, and the religious name, “Mary of the Cross”. She founded the congregation of the Sisters of St Joseph. Soon after, Mary MacKillop founded several schools and within five years Mary had established over thirty schools in South Australia with more than one hundred women joining the Sisters of Saint Joseph.
Mary MacKillop was very conscious of the plight of the poor and needy. She worked with families that lived in isolated areas of Australia. This week Years 4-6 led an Interactive Liturgy, performing a play about Mary MacKillop’s life.
Highlights from the Liturgy can be found on our Trinity Facebook page and YouTube Channel. https://reonline.sydcatholicschools.nsw.edu.au/2020/07/17/feast-of-st-mary-of-the-cross-mackillop/
Readings this Weekend – Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time A
GOSPEL: Matthew 14:22-33
https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2014:22-33&version=NIV
Jesus walks on the water.
“I hope in the Lord. I trust in His Word.”
Gospel Focus
This Gospel of Matthew resonates with lots of experiences in our lives.
Have you ever felt swamped by an event — a traumatic accident, the death of someone we love, betrayal by a friend, the loss of a job, failure in an exam — which seems to leave us floundering? A sudden tempest storms into our life and we cannot find our feet. We can be quite literally gasping for air. We can feel we are drowning. That is when we can cry out in our individual distress ‘Lord, save me’ and Our Lord will extend his hand, pull us from the turbulent water, get into the boat of life with us and calm the storm.
The disciples had started off from the Jewish side of the Sea of Galilee, familiar territory. Jesus guided them through the stormy situation to “the other side”, the pagan side, unfamiliar territory where they would not have felt at home. It takes courage for us to move to a new situation, but with Our Lord’s presence we need not be as afraid as we would otherwise be.
Living the Gospel
Peter takes a big risk. Trusting Jesus, he steps out onto the lake in the middle of a storm. But when the wind frightens him, he begins to sink. Jesus is disappointed that Peter’s faith is not greater.
When did you ever take a big risk because you trusted someone? Did it work out? Is it wrong to have doubts and fears when you take a big risk, even when you trust the person you are with?
But this Gospel is not so much about individuals as it is about the Church. It is about the disciples of Jesus around the figure of Peter. We are the disciples of Jesus gathered in the boat with the successor of St Peter, Pope Francis.
When the Church is buffeted by storms, it is often because the Church is in the midst of a journey from familiar to unfamiliar territory. A boat is often used as a symbol of the Church. In this story it is easy to understand the symbolism of Jesus coming across the stormy waters and winds of modern times in order to help the Church stay afloat. What are the biggest problems for the Church today? What is causing the worst storm? (Excerpts taken from Fr. Michael Tate Homily).
Thought of the Week
Wishing everybody a wonderful weekend.
God bless,
Donna Wade
Trinity Athletics Carnival will be held this term under similar circumstances to the Cross Country. The carnival will take place at Trinity school ovals and will be conducted as a school sports day. Unfortunately, due to the current restrictions in place, parents/carers will be unable to attend but we will be sure to upload as much footage of the day through our Trinity media platforms. The date set for the Athletics carnival is Wednesday 19th August (Week Five).
Term 3 Canberra-Goulburn Sport cancellations are:
- 20th August Canberra Goulburn Primary and Secondary Athletics
- Canberra Goulburn Primary Cricket and Touch Football
Boorowa Annual Touch Football/Netball Carnival 2020 Cancelled: It is regrettable, however understandable, the organisers of this event have had to cancel the 2020 Boorowa Touch Football/Netball Carnival. With the ongoing uncertainty and potential health risks associated with such a big carnival, it was felt that this is the safest course of action following the guidelines and advice from various Educational Organisations – Department of Education NSW and Catholic Education Office, Canberra & Goulburn.

Kinder/Year 1
This week Kinder/Year 1 have been learning all about money - where it comes from, types of coins and notes, how many cents in a dollar etc. The children have been finding it fascinating, especially playing with the 'fake money'! This will continue into next week where they will engage in many more money themed activities.
Year 2/3
What effect does the incline of a plane have on force?
2/3 were busy predicting and measuring what happened when they raised the incline of their tube ramps to the force on their toy cars. We found that the higher the incline, the further the car travelled. We had lots of wonderings about what might happen if we changed the size of the ball, the shape of the car or the length of the tube. We are investigating these forces so that when we build our own and class Rube Goldberg inspired machines, we know what works well and what doesn't. We can't wait to show you these elaborate machines later in the term!
Year 5/6
The Science Unit for this term in Year 5 / 6 is ‘Our Place in Space’. We have formulated a growing wall of ‘I Wonder’ questions and have been finding out some amazing information from our inquiry and research with this unit. This week we researched ‘The SUN’ and had some fun making models of our own using Papier Mache.
We have been adding our questions and information to our class Google Slide share. The link to our main points about the sun is below.
What a wonderful week of learning!

It has been great to see the number of ‘Reading Nights’ children have recorded in their home reading log.
Once children reach a reading goal of nights they are rewarded with a sticker for their book from Mrs Perryman.
Keep up the great reading!!
